Welcome to our practice! There are some things that we think you should know about your child's first visit. We consider this to be one of the most important dental visits. It has been carefully planned over many years of training and experience by our staff and doctor. A parent or legal guardian must be present for the first appointment which will last for approximately one hour.
First, there is a greeting by the doctor in the consultation room with a careful review of the medical and dental history. There will be an explanation of what will follow in this visit for the parent and child in understandable terms.
Next, there is a movie that shows the child the sights and sounds that will be encountered. Older children may see a video of brushing and flossing. This is all followed up by expert education by the dental hygienist at our "Plaque Station" about brushing, flossing, and fluoride use. The appropriate X-rays will be taken based on the child's age and needs.
After the child has been comfortably settled into the dental office environment he or she be seated in the dental chair for the very thorough examination and diagnosis. This includes evaluation of the child's entire mouth, head, neck, and teeth. Overall growth and development is also evaluated and explained. Older children (age 8 and up) will have their teeth cleaned and polished. Instrument orientation will be done; a toothprint (like a fingerprint) will be taken; healthy snack list will be reviewed; a "count" (exam) of the child's teeth will be done. A complete treatment plan, including a cost estimate, will be recorded and given to the parents.
Finally, the child chooses a "prize" which positively reinforces the experience of the visit and the parents will be able to make appointments and any financial arrangements that may be needed.
We know that this will be a very informative and satisfying experience for the whole family. We encourage you to include other family members in this visit!
